historyAll Good in the Hood Winnipeg (AGHW) is a round dance initiative with a focus on stopping the many forms of violence in the city of Winnipeg by bringing culture into the 'hood'. We invite singers, song makers, youth, children, and the people to come together, share culture and share the STOP THE VIOLENCE example at weekly events in Winnipeg. We hope to inspire and encourage other singers so they can do the same in other cities, towns, reserves and communities. Inspired by motivational speaker Mike Scott, and instigated by community leader Darryl Buck, Winnipeggers have been invited to join AGHW in this friendship dance. When Darryl, new to the city, was trying to make his son feel safe - he would pull out his hand drum and sing. The reactions of Winnipeggers proved to Darryl that our communities were in need of healing and has since brought together hundreds of Winnipeggers into full circle. The AGHW Helpers meet weekly to plan these free family events, organize day-of-helper roles and also discuss and strategize for ongoing support.

ALL GOOD - GOALSWe have 4 main focuses and use the Medicine Wheel as our guiding principle when looking to the future of our violence prevention and cultural reclamation work:
1. Providing alternative to violence by role modelling healthy families as AGHW participants and valuable members of the community - increasing safety [BODY] 2. Increase knowledge about traditional teachings - such as round dance, hand drumming, give aways, etc. [SPIRIT] 3. Strengthen cultural identity for First Nation's children, youth, families, and other groups to foster [MIND] 4. Provide space for individuals to share their gifts (stories, inspirational talks, singing, dancing, traditional foods, beadwork and other arts/crafts) [HEART] This event is needed in this community as a tribute and celebration to our rich heritage as a unique culture in aboriginal society. To share, the respect, education and knowledge of all participants, as we are aware that each one has a gift to share. To preserve our heritage that may have been lost or forgotten. The hope and outcome from this event is to increase the overall attendance of the participants and get as many First Nations invited to participate. Create a long lasted impact and reach out to the younger population, by activity promoting positive changes with oneself within the community aboard. |
